Improved Rotorblades

WINDTRUST will optimise the use of carbon fibre to increase blade durability and reduce component weight, which will contribute to extending the overall life of the turbine.

At the same time, the upgrade will also include improved erosion protection and aerodynamic performance, thus leading to lower maintenance costs.

The focus of this part of the project is to increase power production, reduce cost of energy and decrease loads on the wind turbines, all of which have a direct impact on the flexibility and reliability of wind turbines. The specific actions focus on:

  • Design and manufacture of a reliable blade

  • Aerodynamic control technologies

  • Application of materials for erosion protection

An objective is to design flow control devices which modify the aerodynamic behavior of the blade and can be used to increase performance or reduce loads. In both cases energy production and reliability can be optimized. The types of devices considered range from simple passive devices to actively controlled devices.
An additional focus is flow control devices for noise reduction. The use of flow control devices for low-noise emission will have a large impact on the wind energy market as many of the future wind turbines will be placed onshore close to urban areas (to reduce transport costs) where noise emission regulations are very restrictive.

As a consequence, the contribution of the present project will accelerate the wind turbine installation in Europe.
