The project

Windtrust aims to reduce the cost of wind energy generation by further improving the reliability of key components of the turbine.

As with all energy sources, the key to greater competitiveness is to increase the cost-effectiveness of a given energy generation process. In the case of wind turbines, this means ensuring the highest possible levels of reliability and availability by optimising design, operation and maintenance phases. Launched in this context, the WINDTRUST project will further enhance the design of three key components with high improvement potential: the rotor blades, the power electronics and the wind turbine controller.

During the project’s three years, key industrial players and research centres will demonstrate the technical and economic feasibility of the selected technological solutions by fitting such innovative components onto an onshore 2 MW prototype turbine. This will enable them to compare the performances with those of existing, well known turbines, and to extrapolate the results for implementation on larger turbines and off-shore locations.

Increasing the effectiveness and durability of these components will contribute to reducing the overall cost of energy, thus improving the business case of wind energy projects. The successful market uptake of innovative designs will be facilitated by developing business plans for each component within the project, making WINDTRUST a practice-oriented project with results that are of direct use for the industry.
